Slate Youth Centre
DISCOVER The Slate Youth Centre DIFFERENCE
Slate Youth Centre is a drop-in centre and a specialty service of Archway that builds in to the lives of youth in our community by investing in their growth and development. (Watch our 10-Year Anniversary Video at the right)
Feel Welcomed, Appreciated and Valued!
Whether they are participating in group cooking sessions, working on art projects, watching movies, playing video games, or surfing the web, Slate teens are engaged by adult volunteers who encourage them to learn valuable life skills, contribute to the community, and make healthy decisions. Our volunteers are committed to making each teen feel welcome, appreciated, and valued both as an individual and as part of the community.
We believe that all youth are deserving of the best level of service we can provide.
We endeavour to meet each teen where they are at and encourage them to rise to to their potential.
Our programs and workshops are developed and offered in direct response to the needs we see in Slate teens. Slate’s drop-in times and programs are offered free-of-charge and special events (camping, day trips, etc.) are offered at reduced cost so that there is no financial barrier for teens who want to access our services. We fundraise throughout the year to make our programs possible and are grateful for each person who supports our efforts. Over the years, we have helped teens who felt like they were write-offs begin to see hope.
Our greatest encouragement comes when many of our former teens come back as young adults to thank us for teaching them skills they needed to navigate the adult world, supporting them when they were in crisis, and encouraging them to be the best person they can be. Many of our volunteers are Slate teens who have grown up and come back to help other teens, because Slate had such an impact on their lives.
Slate is open Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. We hope to expand those hours in the future to 6 days.
Located in the heart of downtown Truro at 883 Prince Street, Slate Youth Centre is a gathering place for youths aged 10-18 where they can relax and recharge after a day at school or work, and relate in positive and encouraging ways with adult volunteers and other youths.
